AFTER THE GOLDEN AGE for 04/24/2000
Column 50

Easter Sunday A.D. 2000

Marked by encounters with impossible
Creatures, my life is peopled by what seem
The fragments of old dreams, irascible
Realities, strange things that glisten and gleam
In daylight, brazenly avoiding night
That cushions such anomalies and keeps
Them quite respectable and out of sight.
At high noon, I've seen how Batman weeps
How Superman fails to fly on sunny days

But suddenly out of some pagan blaze
On this flat Sunday with the stores all closed
Flashing through the morning mists, across my lawn
The Easter Bunny streaks, depositing
A pattern of eggs, in gold green deftly drawn
Enticing this ancient bard into revisiting
Those childhood forests where I could fly
Like Superman and conquer demons with
A rope flip, a pair of fists and even try
My hand at enriching the never ending myth.
