AFTER THE GOLDEN AGE for 08/15/2005
Vol. 2, #172
If you haven't read this past Sunday's Washington Post or NY Times, you probably don't realize that the Iraq war is now over and skittering out is all that's left to the US. What I want to say here is the utter criminal negligence of the entire administration, and even the democrats who ran Kerry and deservedly lost, thanks to the ultra right wing Democratic Leadership Council, need to take a hard look at themselves and prepare for a sharp left turn before gearing up for the next congressional races, for completely failing to be a real opposition to the neocon insanity. How insane? DON'T DISCOUNT THE STRONG POSSIBILITY THAT ALL THIS MAY RESULT IN THE RETURN TO POWER OF SADDAM HUSSEIN!! Absurd?
Well consider that the constitution the Bushies are rushing the Iraq governing council to create will not go forward until a place is prepared for the Sunnis. And once that happens, with the Kurds going their independent way, it's not unlikely that either Saddam or one of his representatives will again take over the reins of power in Iraq.
And in the meantime, the US is devastated, broke, dispirited, no money left for medicare or social security, a nation now the laughing stock of the world. So desperate they're even cheating on little Canada by ignoring the terms of the Nafta Agreement whose decision that Canada was in the right on the Softwood Lumber disagreement can well be the start of a major breakup with our largest trading partner.
The Bush house of cards is toppling. Take cover!
The only redeeming possibility for this congress is the move to impeach Bush before the whole farce gets any further.
Note that in the midst of all this, the comics industry has still been refighting World War II. Where will it go now?

Consider this week's column a timeout from more long term and significant matters. But it has to be said. When it gets to the point where even Bill O'Reilly is jumping off the train, it's time to stop the train completely.
