TONY'S ONLINE TIPS
for Wednesday, March 2, 2005

Sick Kid

Your beloved Tipster is monumentally under the weather, so all you're getting today is the above photo and the results of various TONY POLLS questions.

Which of these items would you most like reviewed in TONY'S ONLINE TIPS?

CBG 1603

COMICS BUYER'S GUIDE #1603.....15.94%
Freedom Force #1.....13.04%
Mike Baron's Detonator #2.....13.04%
Best of Star Studded Comics.....10.14%
Darkness/Superman #1.....10.14%
Ultra #6.....8.70%
Comic Book Marketplace #119.....5.80%
Invincible #19.....5.80%
Savage Dragon: God War #2.....5.80%
Dead@17: Rough Cut Vol. 2.....4.35%
Beyond Avalon #1.....2.90%
Case Files: Sam & Twitch #13.....1.45%
Daisy Kutter: The Last Train.....1.45%
Superpatriot: War on Terror #2.....1.45%
Case Files: Sam & Twitch #12.....0%
Dead@17: Revolution #3.....0%
Evenfall #7.....0%
Pete Von Sholly's Morbid 2.....0%
Spawn #142 ($2.50).....0%

I'm hesitant to do a full-blown review of COMICS BUYER'S GUIDE because of my long association with the publication, which I think is a must-read for comics fans. On the other hand, I generally do have some comments on each new issue as I read it, so those will be coming along soon. Other likely review subjects are Freedom Force, Mike Baron's Detonator, Bill Schelly's Best of Star Studded Comics, Darkness/Superman, and Ultra.

The Saturn Awards

Every year, the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, & Horror Films gives out its Saturn Awards. We asked TONY POLLS voters to pick their favorites from the nominees in the Academy's television categories.

Which of these Saturn Awards nominees would be your choice for BEST NETWORK TELEVISION SERIES?

Lost

LOST (ABC).....29.52%
Angel (WB).....26.67%
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (CBS).....17.14%
Star Trek: Enterprise (UPN).....10.48%
Alias (ABC).....8.57%
Smallville (WB).....7.62%

There were surprises for me here. I voted for ANGEL because I thought its final season was as strong as any season of any show on television. I think Lost is a terrific show as well, but Angel deserved to go out on top. I was also surprised to see Smallville do so poorly, even though I stopped watching it a few episodes into the new season.

BEST SYNDICATED/CABLE TELEVISION SERIES?

Stargate SG-1

STARGATE: SG-1 (Sci Fi Channel/MGM).....25.30%
The Dead Zone (USA).....18.07%
The 4400 (USA).....18.07%
Dead Like Me (Showtime).....15.66%
Nip/Tuck (FX).....14.46%
Stargate: Atlantis (Sci Fi Channel/MGM).....8.43%

Of the nominees, the only shows I've seen are THE 4400 (which got my vote) and The Dead Zone (which has its ups and downs, but is almost always worth watching).

BEST TELEVISION PRESENTATION?

Farscape Peacekeeper Wars

FARSCAPE: PEACEKEEPER WARS (Sci Fi Channel).....57.53%
Salem's Lot (TNT).....19.18%
The Librarian: Quest For the Spear (TNT).....9.59%
Legend of Earthsea (Sci Fi Channel/Hallmark).....8.22%
The Dead Will Tell (CBS).....2.74%
5ive Days To Midnight (Sci Fi Channel).....2.74%

I haven't seen any of these, so I abstained.

BEST ACTOR ON TELEVISION?

Mathew Fox

MATTHEW FOX (Lost).....27.47%
Ben Browder (Farscape: Peacekeeper Wars).....23.08%
Tom Welling (Smallville).....23.08%
Richard Dean Anderson (Stargate: SG-1).....12.09%
Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck).....8.79%
Noah Wyle (The Librarian:The Quest For the Spear).....5.49%

There are more intriguing characters on Lost, but MATTHEW FOX is as close to a hero as that series has. It isn't an easy role to play, much less play as well as Fox...and that's why he got my vote in this category.

BEST ACTRESS ON TELEVISION?

Jennifer Garner

JENNIFER GARNER (Alias).....28.41%
Kristin Bell (Veronica Mars).....20.45%
Claudia Black (Farscape: Peacekeeper Wars).....15.91%
Evangeline Lilly (Lost).....15.91%
Amber Tamblyn (Joan Of Arcadia).....14.77%
Anne Heche (The Dead Will Tell).....4.55%

This is a joke, right? I haven't seen all of these actresses, but KRISTEN BELL, Evangeline Lilly, and Amber Tamblyn can act rings around Jennifer Garner, comely eye-candy though the spy-lass might be. I cast my ballot for Bell, but Lilly and Tamblyn were in the running for my vote all the way.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR ON TELEVISION?

James Marsters

JAMES MARSTERS (Angel).....37.63%
Michael Rosenbaum (Smallville).....24.73%
Terry O'Quinn (Lost).....20.43%
Dominic Monaghan (Lost).....7.53%
Michael Shanks (Stargate: SG-1).....5.38
Kyle MacLachlan (Librarian: Quest For the Spear)....4.30

I cast my vote for JAMES MARSTERS, who is the best supporting actor TV has seen in years. That said, I think Rosenbaum, O'Quinn, and Monaghan are wonderful in their respective roles. I especially think Rosenbaum deserves kudos for doing such a good job with those incredibly awful Smallville scripts.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS ON TELEVISION?

Amy Acker

AMY ACKER (Angel).....42.86%
Erica Durance (Smallville).....33.33%
Amanda Tapping (Stargate: SG-1).....10.71%
Samantha Mathis (Salem's Lot).....6.33%
Torri Higginson (Stargate: Atlantis).....3.57%
Sonya Walger (The Librarian: Quest For the Spear)...1.19%

I voted for AMY ACKER, who was nothing short of amazing in her duel roles as Fred and Illyria. Forget that "Faith" spin-off. I'm thinking Acker playing Illyria as the modern and dangerous version of career girl Ann Marie.

That girl? Yeah, that's who I'm talking about!

This week's TONY POLLS ask you to look over a list of 20 items and select the comic, book, or DVD you'd most like me to review in a future TOT. There are also several more lists of Saturn Awards nominees for you to vote on.

Thanks for spending part of your day with the walking wounded. I'll be back soon with more stuff.

THE "TONY" SCALE

Zero Tonys
ZERO: Burn your money before buying any comic receiving this rating. It doesn't *necessarily* mean there's absolutely nothing of value here - though it *could* - but whatever value it might possess shrinks into insignificance before its overall awfulness.

Tony
ONE: Buy something else. Maybe I found something which wasn't completely dreadful in the item, but not enough for me to recommend it when there are better comics available. I only want what's best for you, my children.

TonyTony
TWO: Basic judgment call. I found some value, but not enough to recommend it. My review should give you enough info to decide if you want to take a chance on it. Are you feeling lucky today, punk? Well, are you?

TonyTonyTony
THREE: This denotes something I find perfectly respectable. There are better books out there, but I wouldn't regret buying this item. Based on my review, you should be able to determine if it's of interest to you. Let the Force guide you.

TonyTonyTonyTony
FOUR: I recommend anything earning this rating. Unless you don't like the genre, subject matter, or past work of the creators, I believe you'll enjoy this item. Isn't it uncanny how I can look right into your soul that way?

TonyTonyTonyTonyTony
FIVE: Anything getting this rating is among the best comicdom has to offer. You should buy/read this, even if the genre/subject matter doesn't appeal to you. It's for your own good. Me, I live for comics and books this good...but not in a pathetic "Comic-Book Guy" sort of way.
