TONY'S ONLINE TIPS
for Wednesday, March 9, 2005
First there was DOPEY DUCK COMICS, which debuted with an issue dated Fall, 1945. It lasted a mere two issues.
DOPEY DUCK begat WACKY DUCK. This re-titled series ran four issues cover-dated Fall, 1946 to Summer, 1947. A second Wacky Duck run managed but two issues in 1948 with the numbering starting over from #1.
WACKY DUCK begat JUSTICE, whose first issue was #7, but which switched to its real numbering with issue #4. The title ran under this name for 52 issues. The cover shown here was pencilled by Syd Shores and perhaps inked by Christopher Rule, who some believe is the unknown inker of FANTASTIC FOUR #1.
JUSTICE #7(1) was cover-dated Fall, 1947. Issue #52 was dated March, 1955. This cover...
...is the one that begat today's TOT. Dated December, 1948, the lecture given by the grim police officer on this cover before the cowering criminal struck me as so over-the-top melodramatic I had to share it with you.
However, our journey is not yet complete.
JUSTICE begat TALES OF JUSTICE, which ran from #53 [May, 1955] to #67 [September, 1957], a total of 15 issues. Sol Brodsky drew the above cover.
To give credit where it's due...
Today's TOT would have consisted of another cute animal photo with a few words of apology/explanation as to why you're still not getting a full column from me had it not been for my daily visit to Greg Gatlin's amazing ATLAS TALES website:
www.atlastales.com
I saw the cover of JUSTICE #7 - the real #7 - there and knew you had to see it. Then, on a whim, I followed Gatlin's links back to WACKY DUCK and DOPEY DUCK and forward to TALES OF JUSTICE, which begat all you've just read and seen.
Three cheers and a tiger for Greg Gatlin!
Thanks for spending a part of your day with me. I'll be back soon with more stuff.

THE "TONY" SCALE
ZERO: Burn your money before buying any comic receiving this rating. It doesn't *necessarily* mean there's absolutely nothing of value here - though it *could* - but whatever value it might possess shrinks into insignificance before its overall awfulness.
ONE: Buy something else. Maybe I found something which wasn't completely dreadful in the item, but not enough for me to recommend it when there are better comics available. I only want what's best for you, my children.
TWO: Basic judgment call. I found some value, but not enough to recommend it. My review should give you enough info to decide if you want to take a chance on it. Are you feeling lucky today, punk? Well, are you?
THREE: This denotes something I find perfectly respectable. There are better books out there, but I wouldn't regret buying this item. Based on my review, you should be able to determine if it's of interest to you. Let the Force guide you.
FOUR: I recommend anything earning this rating. Unless you don't like the genre, subject matter, or past work of the creators, I believe you'll enjoy this item. Isn't it uncanny how I can look right into your soul that way?
FIVE: Anything getting this rating is among the best comicdom has to offer. You should buy/read this, even if the genre/subject matter doesn't appeal to you. It's for your own good. Me, I live for comics and books this good...but not in a pathetic "Comic-Book Guy" sort of way.
