Day Off

The title of the above painting by Maine artist Wini Smart is "Day Off" and it fits my mood. It also fits the circumstances of today's TOT because I am, indeed, taking a day off.

Saturday was a productive and tiring day. I didn't get to bed until three a.m. Sunday morn. I got up and was on the road to POP CULTURE FEST in Columbus by nine a.m.

Bob Ingersoll did the driving; it was the first time in weeks we've had a chance to talk in person. At the show, I also got to spend some quality time with Mid-Ohio-Con's Roger Price, Justin and Suzi from World Famous Comics, Thom Zahler, Sean McKeever, and Ron Palillo of Welcome Back Kotter fame. All of the above are terrific people, but this was my first time meeting Ron. What a sweetheart of a guest and what a really nice guy.

Anyway...taking a day off around Casa Isabella doesn't mean I goof off. I'll be working on new TONY POLLS questions for today. I'll be reading review items and organizing my work for the rest of the week. I'll be running errands (grocery store and post office). I'll be sorting comics and straightening the house. I'll be taking Kelly to softball practice. And whatever else comes up during the day. It's a good life even if I do weaken.

While I'm taking the day off, I could use some advice and help from my loyal legions of TOT readers...

It's been a while before I have attempted to sell any scripts to the better-paying markets in the comics industry and that was a conscious decision. While recovering from various illnesses, which I seem to have done, I thought it better to devote my energies to existing clients. And I'll continue to do as much work for those clients as I can because they were there with the gigs when no one else was there. But...now that I'm getting stronger every day, I'm ready to run with the big dogs again.

By "advice and help," I guess I'm asking you guys and gals in TOT-land to keep your ears and e-mails to the ground for me. When you have the opportunity to drop my name to someone who might be interested in working with me, drop away. If you hear of possible openings, let me know. Let people know if you've enjoyed my comics writing and that you're willing to shell out cash for new Isabella comics. Let me know what kind of comics you'd like to see me write in the future.

On a related note, I'm thinking of seeing if I can break into syndication with my columns - perhaps humorous, perhaps serious - on both everyday life and news events. I'll be running examples of these in future TOTs. Feel free to show the columns to your local newspapers and let the editors know both the columns and myself are available for their use at reasonable rights. You should also feel free to suggest additional topics to me.

Now the money-grubbing segment of this column...

Money is going to be tight at Casa Isabella this summer as we pay for necessary repairs and renovations on the place, as well as move forward with renovation projects which, while they might not be vital are projects which will cost us much less if we have them done concurrent with the other work. So, once again, I must urge TOT readers to show a little love for this feature by making use of our TIP THE TIPSTER link.

I also have a question for you in this regard.

I very often end up with multiple copies of comics and books because I've ordered them and then received review copies of them. I'm thinking of offering these duplicates as incentives to tipster tippers who donate to this website. The catch would be that this would only apply to donations of $20 or more to cover the time and postage of sending these items to you...more if the tipper doesn't live in the United States.

My question...would you be more inclined to donate to TOT if you were getting something in return beyond the free columns we've been bringing you on a nigh-daily basis?

While I'm waiting for your responses, starting today, I'll begin sending out incentives to anyone who make a $20 donation AND includes a mailing address with the donation. If you're not living in the USA, it'll have to be a $30 donation.

One more thing. If you'd like to see more of Winnie Smart's art, check out her website at:

http://smart-studio.com/index.html

Thanks for spending a part of your day with me. I'll be back soon with more stuff.

THE "TONY" SCALE

Zero Tonys
ZERO: Burn your money before buying any comic receiving this rating. It doesn't *necessarily* mean there's absolutely nothing of value here - though it *could* - but whatever value it might possess shrinks into insignificance before its overall awfulness.

Tony
ONE: Buy something else. Maybe I found something which wasn't completely dreadful in the item, but not enough for me to recommend it when there are better comics available. I only want what's best for you, my children.

TonyTony
TWO: Basic judgment call. I found some value, but not enough to recommend it. My review should give you enough info to decide if you want to take a chance on it. Are you feeling lucky today, punk? Well, are you?

TonyTonyTony
THREE: This denotes something I find perfectly respectable. There are better books out there, but I wouldn't regret buying this item. Based on my review, you should be able to determine if it's of interest to you. Let the Force guide you.

TonyTonyTonyTony
FOUR: I recommend anything earning this rating. Unless you don't like the genre, subject matter, or past work of the creators, I believe you'll enjoy this item. Isn't it uncanny how I can look right into your soul that way?

TonyTonyTonyTonyTony
FIVE: Anything getting this rating is among the best comicdom has to offer. You should buy/read this, even if the genre/subject matter doesn't appeal to you. It's for your own good. Me, I live for comics and books this good...but not in a pathetic "Comic-Book Guy" sort of way.
