Walt Disney Vacation Parade 4

Yes, you did see this cover in yesterday's TOT. I never got around to telling you anything about what seems to be a pretty neat comic book. So...

WALT DISNEY VACATION PARADE #4 [July, 1953] was one of those terrific 100-page giants Dell Comics published to cash in on summer and various holidays. The GRAND COMICS DATABASE [www.comics.org] tentatively identifies the cover artist as a "D. McLaughlin." I've been unable to learn anything about this artist online - it's not the first time I've used one of his covers here - so I'd appreciate any information anyone out there would like to send me.

Inside the issue:

Donald Duck/"In Panama" (17 pages, art by Jack Bradbury);

L'il Bad Wolf (8 pages, art by Harvey Eisenburg);

Peter Pan (8 pages, art by Al Hubbard);

Mickey Mouse/"Whaley-go-round" (12 pages, art by Tony Strobl);

Chip 'n' Dale (8 pages, pencils by Riley Thompson);

Robin Hood/"The Beards of Little John" (8 pages, script by Don Christensen, art by Russ Manning);

Grandma Duck (6 pages, script by Don Christensen, art by Frank McSavage);

Pluto (8 pages, art by Paul Murry);

Bucky Bug (2 pages);

"A Summer Vacation" (3-page text story); and,

Huey, Dewey, and Louie (6 pages, art by Bob Moore).

Because I apparently love to torture myself, I looked up this issue in THE OFFICIAL OVERSTREET COMIC BOOK PRICE GUIDE. According to that tome, a near-mint condition copy of this issue should sell for around $260.

I didn't find any near-mint copies on eBay, but I did discover several completed and/or ongoing auctions for good and very good copies of the issue. The low end was $5 with a hefty shipping fee; since I know the dealer and also think he's one of the best in the country, I placed a bid on that copy. I'll be amazed if I actually win this auction.

The high end was $49.99 with no bids; the same book was again offered at $39.99 with no bids. That's not surprising; Overstreet lists this comic book at $26 in very good condition and this copy skirts the lowest edges of that grade.

There's also an ongoing auction with a starting bid of $6.99, but the seller puts so many conditions on the sale and seems, well, so angry that I'm not surprised she's had no takers. If eBay were a store, she'd probably loudly proclaim to customers that it wasn't a library. Very off-putting.

This is all you get from me today. I'm working on what will be a long installment of TOT and I need to buy myself some time to do it up right. Thanks for stopping by. I'll be back soon with more stuff.

THE "TONY" SCALE

Zero Tonys
ZERO: Burn your money before buying any comic receiving this rating. It doesn't *necessarily* mean there's absolutely nothing of value here - though it *could* - but whatever value it might possess shrinks into insignificance before its overall awfulness.

Tony
ONE: Buy something else. Maybe I found something which wasn't completely dreadful in the item, but not enough for me to recommend it when there are better comics available. I only want what's best for you, my children.

TonyTony
TWO: Basic judgment call. I found some value, but not enough to recommend it. My review should give you enough info to decide if you want to take a chance on it. Are you feeling lucky today, punk? Well, are you?

TonyTonyTony
THREE: This denotes something I find perfectly respectable. There are better books out there, but I wouldn't regret buying this item. Based on my review, you should be able to determine if it's of interest to you. Let the Force guide you.

TonyTonyTonyTony
FOUR: I recommend anything earning this rating. Unless you don't like the genre, subject matter, or past work of the creators, I believe you'll enjoy this item. Isn't it uncanny how I can look right into your soul that way?

TonyTonyTonyTonyTony
FIVE: Anything getting this rating is among the best comicdom has to offer. You should buy/read this, even if the genre/subject matter doesn't appeal to you. It's for your own good. Me, I live for comics and books this good...but not in a pathetic "Comic-Book Guy" sort of way.
