TONY'S ONLINE TIPS
for Thursday, October 20, 2005
This is another short note from me to you. I will be back to full-sized columns on Monday, October 24, but today's installment consists of brief updates.
Although I'm hesitant to be too optimistic when discussing the Casa Isabella remodeling/renovations/repairs, it does look as if we could be finished with our current contractor by the middle of next week. Then we can have additional work done by someone who isn't utterly clueless, i.e., someone who doesn't think we're just awful for forcing him in October to finish a job which was supposed to be finished by the end of July.
As I feared, our current contractor has failed to pay at least one of his subcontractors. Under a really stupid Ohio law, we are ultimately responsible for paying the subcontractor...who we didn't hire in the first place. However, this subcontractor has finished all he was hired to do and will happily work with us to collect his remaining payment from our current contractor. I plan to seek like accommodation with any other subcontractors or suppliers who don't get their full payment. They all did good work and, in the future, we may be hiring them directly.
This project, especially since mid-August or so, has consumed my time like Dagwood on a sandwich. There have been a couple weeks when I've spent 30 hours doing whatever it took to get the project moving and no week that I can recall when I didn't put in at least 15 hours. Getting the contractor to finish up his end of the work and settling the final bill will probably eat up another 30 hours of my life. That's minimum and assuming no lawsuits.
However, when all is said and done, I think I can get a funny and helpful book out of this. With lots of humorous illustrations. And maybe a movie sale.
I think George Clooney would be good as me.
The trip to the dentist I mentioned in Tuesday's column didn't go as swimmingly as I would have liked. I have to take some x-rays to a consultant before I know for certain, but it appears I will be having root canal surgery soon...hopefully before I run out of the Vicodin which my dentist prescribed.
Oddly enough, though I'm generally the poster child for nasty side effects, I've never had any problems with Vicodin. Also oddly enough, the last time I had root canal surgery, I bounced back from it within 24 hours. So I'm not anticipating missing any TOTs as a result of this.
However...
I will be tweaking my online schedule ever so slightly just to balance out the workload a bit.

THE "TONY" SCALE
ZERO: Burn your money before buying any comic receiving this rating. It doesn't *necessarily* mean there's absolutely nothing of value here - though it *could* - but whatever value it might possess shrinks into insignificance before its overall awfulness.
ONE: Buy something else. Maybe I found something which wasn't completely dreadful in the item, but not enough for me to recommend it when there are better comics available. I only want what's best for you, my children.
TWO: Basic judgment call. I found some value, but not enough to recommend it. My review should give you enough info to decide if you want to take a chance on it. Are you feeling lucky today, punk? Well, are you?
THREE: This denotes something I find perfectly respectable. There are better books out there, but I wouldn't regret buying this item. Based on my review, you should be able to determine if it's of interest to you. Let the Force guide you.
FOUR: I recommend anything earning this rating. Unless you don't like the genre, subject matter, or past work of the creators, I believe you'll enjoy this item. Isn't it uncanny how I can look right into your soul that way?
FIVE: Anything getting this rating is among the best comicdom has to offer. You should buy/read this, even if the genre/subject matter doesn't appeal to you. It's for your own good. Me, I live for comics and books this good...but not in a pathetic "Comic-Book Guy" sort of way.
