TONY'S ONLINE TIPS
for Thursday, April 17, 2008

Lassie 6

What's that, Lassie? Tony's in the well?

What has gone before:

Most of my Tony's Online Tips columns run longer than this one. When Lassie shows up, it means that some event or series of events has prevented me from writing a full-length TOT. On this particular occasion, I'm wrapping up a freelance assignment while simultaneously working to get my high blood pressure under control. It's no biggie; it just seemed prudent for me to take things a bit easier this week.

What I like to call "life's little annoyances" played a part in my decision and my high blood pressure. I'm often angry of late and usually with good reason. Sometimes it's because I'm enraged that our war criminal president and his goons are seemingly getting a pass for their crimes. Sometimes it's because a comics publisher - I'm looking at you, DC - is screwing creators past and present. Sometimes it's as little a thing as some online troll trying to get my goat. That last one happened this week.

A gutless coward thought it would be fun to create a bogus and vile "Tony Isabella" profile page elsewhere, announcing the page on my message board while simultaneously posting to my message board under other names. He was using rerouting technology to hide his identity. It didn't work.

Oh, it took some time and effort by my friends, but we found him out. He made mistakes - they always do - and we got him. We informed other boards and forums of his actions and his identity. I suspect those other places won't be too quick to cut him slack in the future. Nor should they.

I want to thank the folks who helped me track down this troll. My message board and other fine boards like it thrive because they are communities of good people who do not stand around shrugging their shoulders when mean-spirited miscreants attempt to interfere with our pleasant conversations. They get to work and preserve our communities. Once again, my sincere thanks for all who helped me in this matter.

I'm not so optimistic as to believe this troll has learned his lesson and changed his ways. He'll eventually screw up what passes for courage in someone too frightened to act in the open and he'll take another stab at annoying me or someone else. But he'll likely still make mistakes and be exposed again.

Maybe next time in public.

Or maybe he'll get away with it next time. If that happens, it won't change anything. Even if no one else knows who he is, he himself will still know what he is.

Thanks for visiting. Lassie and I will be back tomorrow with another one of these brief notes with the hope of getting back to full-length TOTs starting Monday.

THE "TONY" SCALE

Zero Tonys
ZERO: Burn your money before buying any comic receiving this rating. It doesn't *necessarily* mean there's absolutely nothing of value here - though it *could* - but whatever value it might possess shrinks into insignificance before its overall awfulness.

Tony
ONE: Buy something else. Maybe I found something which wasn't completely dreadful in the item, but not enough for me to recommend it when there are better comics available. I only want what's best for you, my children.

TonyTony
TWO: Basic judgment call. I found some value, but not enough to recommend it. My review should give you enough info to decide if you want to take a chance on it. Are you feeling lucky today, punk? Well, are you?

TonyTonyTony
THREE: This denotes something I find perfectly respectable. There are better books out there, but I wouldn't regret buying this item. Based on my review, you should be able to determine if it's of interest to you. Let the Force guide you.

TonyTonyTonyTony
FOUR: I recommend anything earning this rating. Unless you don't like the genre, subject matter, or past work of the creators, I believe you'll enjoy this item. Isn't it uncanny how I can look right into your soul that way?

TonyTonyTonyTonyTony
FIVE: Anything getting this rating is among the best comicdom has to offer. You should buy/read this, even if the genre/subject matter doesn't appeal to you. It's for your own good. Me, I live for comics and books this good...but not in a pathetic "Comic-Book Guy" sort of way.
