Captain America 250

"Comics and politics" were the theme of the Tony Polls we asked you during the week of May 13. Here are the final results of the voting.

This fall, the four-issue DCU: Decisions examines the political leanings of various super-heroes. Rate your level of interest in this mini-series.

Near-Mint.....5.83%
Fine.....7.50%
Very Good.....7.50%
Good.....14.17%
Fair.....22.50%
Poor.....42.50%

This was a tougher question for me to answer than I thought it would be. The subject matter does interest me. However, given my low regard for the creative efforts of Dan DiDio, who came up with the idea and will apparently oversee it, and Judd Winick, one of the two writers on the series, I voted poor.

My general rule of thumb on questions like this one is that if your combined percentage for "fair" and "poor" is over 50%, you're in big trouble. I don't think this mini-series will set the sales charts on fire.

Moving right along...

Ignoring the question of how well or badly it's done, how do you feel about political issues as elements in super-hero comic books?

I'm okay with it.....47.76%
I don't like it.....28.81%
I like it.....23.73%

My prediction for this was a 50/25/25 split and I came pretty close to getting it right. I voted I like it. I've never been shy about inserting political commentary into the comics I've written. I think it adds a bit of realism to the stories and thus makes the more fantastic elements more believable.

In general, how would you characterize your voting record?

Democratic.....58.77%
Other.....25.44%
Republican.....15.79%

I went with Democratic and figured the past four years of George Bush would pretty much guarantee that a majority of the voters would do so as well.

In general, how would you characterize your politics?

Liberal.....56.78%
Middle-of-the-road.....33.05%
Conservative.....10.17%

I'm not sure any of these terms mean what any of us think they mean, but, asked to choose, I went with Liberal.

How would you rate President George W. Bush?

Worst president ever.....68.57%
Really bad president.....23.81%
Bad president.....7.62%

Do I have to tell you how I voted? Didn't think so.

Sometimes I ask questions like this, puppet master that I am, because I know it will absolutely enrage a certain small segment of my readers. These few will send me nasty e-mails and even call me on the phone to vent their hatred of me. But they should know that I do it out of love.

If you honestly think Bush is better than a "bad president," you're crying out for help. I'd be happy to comfort you and direct you to mental health specialists.

Sadly, my ability to help you is severely diminished because you never seem to sign your e-mails and give me your names when you call me. Maybe your passion makes you forgetful.

Whether you love me or despise me, thanks for spending a part of your day with me.

I'll be back tomorrow with more stuff.

THE "TONY" SCALE

Zero Tonys
ZERO: Burn your money before buying any comic receiving this rating. It doesn't *necessarily* mean there's absolutely nothing of value here - though it *could* - but whatever value it might possess shrinks into insignificance before its overall awfulness.

Tony
ONE: Buy something else. Maybe I found something which wasn't completely dreadful in the item, but not enough for me to recommend it when there are better comics available. I only want what's best for you, my children.

TonyTony
TWO: Basic judgment call. I found some value, but not enough to recommend it. My review should give you enough info to decide if you want to take a chance on it. Are you feeling lucky today, punk? Well, are you?

TonyTonyTony
THREE: This denotes something I find perfectly respectable. There are better books out there, but I wouldn't regret buying this item. Based on my review, you should be able to determine if it's of interest to you. Let the Force guide you.

TonyTonyTonyTony
FOUR: I recommend anything earning this rating. Unless you don't like the genre, subject matter, or past work of the creators, I believe you'll enjoy this item. Isn't it uncanny how I can look right into your soul that way?

TonyTonyTonyTonyTony
FIVE: Anything getting this rating is among the best comicdom has to offer. You should buy/read this, even if the genre/subject matter doesn't appeal to you. It's for your own good. Me, I live for comics and books this good...but not in a pathetic "Comic-Book Guy" sort of way.
