THE PHILODOXER for 06/04/2006
Silly Rabbit, Why Don't You Kill Yourself?
Who knew rabbits with nothing to live for could bring so much joy to the world?
The Book of Bunny Suicides, written and illustrated by Andy Riley, is 80 priceless pages worth of illustrated jokes harping on a single absurd premise: how many ways can a cotton-tailed lagomorph kill itself? The result is downright addictive.
Though the drawings are simple, Riley's comic skill cannot be denied. Since the vast majority of the illustrations in Bunny Suicides are one-panel jokes with no word bubbles, each gag hinges on the immediate comprehension of each scene. And page after page, I found myself cackling with morbid delight. One of the most charming aspects of the book is that while many of the bunnies die violent deaths (decapitation, shredding via airplane turbine, death by toaster, etc.), the depictions are wryly tasteful: no splattering bunny innards, no bunny blood oozing all over the place. In fact, their death wish gratified, the suicidal chaps generally display a serene gratitude.
You'll blast through Bunny Suicides in a single sitting (there's also Return of the Bunny Suicides if you can't get enough), but it's one of those books that you'll keep coming back to for years for a quick and satisfying chuckle. If you love thy neighbor, give copies to your friends, or keep one on your coffee table or near the commode.
Take care folks! See you next Sunday!
